Lyrics
Back From Little Rock
By Ted Horrell
I thought I’d bring her flowers, it’s a step I hadn’t taken
In the three months we’d been dating – it was time
By the time I got the flowers it was really coming down
By the time I hit the airport me and them had nearly drowned
But I made it there with time to spare, I saw some people sitting there
I sat with them, they seemed alright to me
We were staring at the green arrival screen
Well I guess I should have guessed it cause the storm was oh so mean
But an hour later “flight delayed” popped up on the screen
The flowers drooped the slightest bit, as I sat there and bit my lip
And wondered if they’d make it, and would I?
After an airport beer and airport food, my cell phone raised my somber mood
It was the girl I’d bought the flowers for
She said the weather’d forced her plane to land
And through the cell phone in my hand
I heard the words I’d dreaded hours before
She said I won’t be back from Little Rock tonight
Every impulse in my body said get in that car and drive
Forget the rain and lack of sleep
My love will get me there alive
A hundred thirty seven miles from Memphis to her hugs and smiles
Or would it be too shocking a surprise?
Because the flowers wouldn’t be so fresh, and I would be so unexpected
What if I saw confusion in her eyes?
Have I known her long enough? Will I come off as too in love?
Will she turn me away? Will I have a place to stay?
Should I have even bought the flowers?
Will she even mind the extra hours until she gets on board?
Have I gone overboard?
Have I gone overboard?
